Abstract:

The article proposes a new concept for the analysis of intertextual connections of the novel “Between two Stools”, written by a philologist, linguist, poet, writer E. V. Klyuev. Two types of sources of allusions and quotations compete in the novel. On the one hand, these are texts familiar to the reader from the school curriculum, on the other, these are texts known to readers of philosophical literature published in the USSR in the 1960s and 1980s. For the interpretation of the novel, the second type of sources gives more than the fi rst. In contrast to the existing experiences of interpreting the novel as a work in an exclusively absurdist aesthetic, our analysis of the text is based on the identifi cation of allusions to the concepts of philosophers (Hume, Mill, Russell, Wittgenstein), who laid the foundations of analytical philosophy, thanks to which a new approach to language was formed in linguistics of the 20th century. The inclusion of the novel in the context of the history of linguistic teachings makes it possible to reveal the philosophical content of the dialogues, actions and elements of the characters’ speech behavior. The system of characters is interpreted as a refl ection of ideas and concepts that are related to the history of the formation of logical analysis of language.
