“RUSSIAN” IN DOSTOEVSKY’S TEXTS AND RUSSIA WITHOUT DOSTOEVSKY

Abstract:

The article describes some features of the use of the word “Russian” in Fyodor M. Dostoevsky’s texts. The concept ‘Russian’, without any doubt, occupies a key position in Dostoevsky’s thesaurus, accordingly, the word “Russian” representing this concept performs the function of an ideologeme, an ideoglossa. Other units of this type, associated with the concept ‘Russian’, are God, Christ, Orthodoxy, soul, goodness, spirit, all-human and some others. The analysis is carried out on the basis of linguistic data recorded in “Dostoevsky’s Idioglossary”, the structure of the dictionary entry of which allows refl ecting such features of the described idioglossa as its subordinating and coordinating connections (hypotaxis and parataxis), the use in autonymous utterances, aphorisms, etc. The hypotaxis of the word “Russian” shows that the meaning of this word can be leveled, especially in such frequency combinations as Russian people, Russian person, Russian soul, etc. It is in such word-combinations that the semantic blurriness of the concept of ‘Russian’ manifests itself most strongly. The parataxis of the word “Russian” allows to determine the intersection zones of the corresponding textual semantic fi elds with other fi elds, for example, ‘real, true’, ‘God’, ‘good’, ‘Orthodoxy’, etc. The authors make an assumption that with all the uncertainty of concepts ‘Russian’, ‘Russian people’, ‘Russian soul’, ‘Russian woman’ and so on they are based primarily on openness, allhumanity, but not common-humanity, not like others, but for others.
