Abstract:

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of self-reference in the aspect of correlation of two interrelated linguistic processes — refl exivity and linguistic creativity. The points under discussion are: interpretations of this phenomenon in philosophical logic, visual art and linguistic; two diff erent understandings of self-reference: as a reference to the message itself and as a reference to the speaker (addresser); self-reference as a particular manifestation of refl exivity in language and speech. Examples of linguistic phenomena demonstrate the principle of self-similarity and auto-refl exivity, in cases of reduplication, autonymous use, recursion, logical paradoxes, and performatives. The mechanism of this phenomenon is demonstrated in the scheme of the artistic (poetic) sign. Examples of self-reference at various language levels in the poetic experiment of the 20th century, from phonetics to pragmatics, suggest that self-referentiality of the artistic sign is a particular manifestation of the poetic function in the fi eld of sign creation. Self-reference as a mechanism of refl exivity has a special function in poetic discourse. It gives language more dimensions of refl ection, since not only the word is turned to itself, but also all linguistic elements, from sound to utterance and its illocutionary force. As a result of the study, the levels at which self-referentiality is manifested in a literary text are classifi ed as references of linguistic signs to themselves, which testifi es to the linguistic potential of this process in the experimental poetic discourse.
