EAST SLAVIC VOCABULARY IN THE CHURCH SLAVIC BIBLE: VERBS WITH THE VY- PREFIX
Abstract:
The article analyzes in detail those few cases (only nine examples for fi ve verbal lexemes) in the modern Church Slavonic Bible when verbs with the East Slavic prefi x vyare used, which has always been uncharacteristic for the Church language of Rus’ and is never found in modern Church Slavonic worship (where the prefi x iz/is- works as an analogue to vy- with the same meaning of moving outward). The researched fragments of the Slavic text of the New and mainly the Old Testament with the studied verbs that feature the prefi x vy- are compared to the text of the Greek and Latin originals of the Slavic Bible and to materials from the Old Russian dictionaries and corpora; the topic of the legal terminology formation in the Russian language is also briefl y touched upon. Some elements of the document language vocabulary of the Early Modern period, including East Slavic legal terms, are shown to have penetrated into the language of the Slavic Bible when they exactly fi t the sense of the situation described in Scripture: such lexemes with the prefi x vy- have appeared by the work of the Ostrog Bible editors.
