KAMENKA PERVAYA OR KAMENKA-PERVAYA? VARIATION AND CODIFICATION IN TOPONYMY

The paper deals with the spelling of geographical names with postpositive ordinal numerals in the State Catalogue of Geographical Names, on topographic maps, and in normative legal acts. The paper begins with the identification in the State Catalogue of Geographical Names of 207 toponyms with postpositive ordinal numerals expressed in a verbal way. The author offers quantitative data on the spelling of the names of localities and natural objects in the constituent territories of the Russian Federation. It is established that postpositive ordinal adjectives in toponyms are written both separately and with a hyphen. At the same time, separate spellings generally prevail. However, at the subject level, the spelling of toponyms, especially of names of localities, is unified in favor of either separate or hyphenated spelling. On topographic maps, in the toponyms under consideration, in most cases, postpositive ordinal numerals are expressed in an alphanumeric way, according to cartographic instructions. If a verbal way of expressing ordinal numerals is used, their separate spelling is most often chosen. The spelling of toponyms in the legal acts of the constituent territories largely coincides with their spelling in the State Catalogue of Geographical Names. The analysis of the toponyms standardized in recent years shows that the basis of standardization is the spelling of toponyms in the legal acts of the constituent territories. The author associates different approaches to writing toponyms with postpositive ordinal numerals with the incomplete nature of codifying the writing of toponyms with postpositive adjectives in general.
