Abstract:

The first four editions of the “Dictionary of the French Academy” (1694, 1718, 1740, 1762), played an outstanding role in the history of the formation of European monolingual lexicography. One of the most important theoretical propositions developed by French academics was the proclamation of usage (usage) “the master of orthography”. We present in the article Russian translation of texts of prefaces to the Dictionary devoted to orthography. These texts supply us with data for a broader comparison of the spelling concept of the “Dictionary of the French Academy” with the spelling concept of the “Dictionary of the Russian Academy” or other dictionaries.
