THE EXPRESSION OF MODALITY: THE PROBLEM OF THE COMPREHENSIVE DESCRIPTION

 The article discusses the question of indicators of the grammatical category of the modality, with the focus on the completeness of the description. During reading of the basic grammars and authoritative monographs it is revealed that in total there are slightly more than fifty model lexemes in these descriptions. Further it is demonstrated that beyond the description there are still about the same number of indicators: more than forty lexemes and syntactic constructions. The lexemes that need to be included in the lists of modal indicators include forms of the type difficult, problematic; idioms of the type in forces, in character, and also somatic idioms of the type on the shoulder, the tongue does not rise, the hands itch, and also the slang forms lazily and in scrap. In addition, the modal indicators include secondary verbs of complex modal semantics. Finally, attention is drawn to the fact that the indicators of modality can be syntactic constructions — as a simple and complex sentence, including those that do not include modal lexicon
