Abstract:

The article suggests etymological interpretations for five Rus. dialectal words. The interpretations allow to include these words in established Proto-Slav. etymological families and thereby define more precisely our notions of these families’ structural and semantic derivational potentials, at the same time backing support or refutation for certain previously suggested etymological interpretations. Pskov. омлéн ‘kind of sweet pastry’ is interpreted as Pr.-Sl. *obmlenъ derived from Pr.-Sl. *melti, accordingly for Russ. блин ‘pancake, crepe’ one can propose an origin from *obmlinъ or *obmlenъ. Pskov. оскарябиться ‘wither’ is linked to Proto-Slav. *korębati , further connecting both words to *kora and accordingly to *(s)ker- (not to *ręb-!). South Kama region корть ‘moth’ is linked to Pr.-Sl. *kъrtěti. Pskov. остерять ‘gnaw round’ − to Pr.-Sl. *terti. Archang. волόк ‘cloud’ − to Pr.-Sl. *velkti (: *ob- volko / *obvolkъ / *obvolka), making it a singular Slav. word for ‘cloud’ with no pref. *ob-.
