Abstract:

This paper investigates Grot’s approaches to the transfer of loanwords (foreign borrowings) in writing, one of the most complicated problems of Russian orthography. By the “uniformity of writing”, which the scholar aspired to, he meant not a superficial unification but the result of “investigating language laws”. Examples of specific orthographic problems are used to show that Grot’s views served as the basis for studying and standardizing spelling in this area for many years to come.
