DERZHAVIN’S LANGUAGE DICTIONARY IN GROT’S PROJECT OF THE POET’S COLLECTED WORKS

Among academician Iakov Grot’s numerous works Derzhavin’s collected works in 9 volumes (1864–1883), which were prepared by Ia. Grot for publication, stand out. These volumes include Derzhavin’s poems, dramatic works, works in prose, correspondence, a full biography, etc. A special place in the publication occupies volume 9 which contains the «Dictionary to Derzhavin’s poems»; it is the first experience of the writer’s dictionary in Russian lexicography. Grot considers an individual author’s language dictionary a source for studying the history of the standard language. Interpretation in such a dictionary he restricted to the peculiarities of word usage by the writer. Units special in some way were selected by Grot from the first two volumes of Derzhavin’s collected works. He described these units by means of concordance principles. The model of the dictionary entry «title — illustration — cipher of work» reflects the presence of word in the Derzhavin’s language, the way it is used and its position in the text. The model was applied in many dictionary entries to the notional words, auxiliaries service one, as well as to a few proper names. Cases of deviations from the accepted structure of the entry reflect not so much the author’s inconsistency, as his search for forms and ways of presentation important information about words in a dictionary of a new type (the word origin, its meaning, part of speech or gender, accentuation peculiarities, etc.). «Dictionary of Derzhavin’s poems» by main parameters is a differential dictionary. It allowed to solve only a limited number of tasks. However, the experience of Grot, who combined the interest to dictionary work and attention to the work of Russian writers laid the foundation for the direction, which later formed the individual writer’s lexicography.
