Abstract:

The article describes evidence of Komi-Permyak and Udmurt influence in the Russian dialect of the village of Karsovay, Balezinsky district of Udmurtia. We have studied transcribed recordings of dialect speech from 1981 and audio recordings from 2006, which are included in the Corpus of Russian Dialects of Udmurtia. Some phonetic, grammatical and lexical phenomena are discussed. Their occurrence in the local variety of Russian can be traced back to linguistic interference that arose in a mixed population. The PRAAT program was used to clarify the properties of individual sounds. The data are compared with the results of an earlier (mid-twentieth century) study of dialects north of Karsovay. The comparison of records from different periods allows us to draw conclusions about the gradual disappearance of some phonetic phenomena in the Russian speech of the inhabitants of the village of Karsovay under study (pronunciation of lisp s’, non-distinction of affricates), greater stability of peculiar grammatical structures (use of nominative case forms in constructions with the words ‘no’, ‘many’, collective numerals) and preservation of lexical borrowings from Udmurt and Komi-Permyak. Since the noted phonetic and grammatical features are characteristic of both Udmurt and Komi-Permyak, the task of precisely establishing a single source of influence was not set in the work.
