ON TWO SUPPOSED CASES OF FOLK ETYMOLOGY IN THE SLAVIC LEXICON (ON THE MATERIAL OF THE VOLUMES “ANIMAL WORLD” AND “HOME ECONOMICS AND COOKING” OF SLA)
Abstract:
Discovery of folk etymology cases as the reason of irregular changes presents considerable interest for reconstruction of the Slavic lexicon history. In the article two facts of presupposed structural reformation are analysed. First one is the change of Ukr. perelelic’a (Proto-Slav. *perpelica) to Ukr. Dial. čereste´ləc’a. The author interprets as folk etymological substitution pere- (interpreted as prefi x) by synonym čeres- and -pelby the suff . -tel-. Second case is generally accepted genesis of East Slavic скорлупа as result of folk etymological reformation: Proto-Slav. *skorupa > *skorlupa > East Slav. скоролупа > скорлупа. On materials of SLA the author denies the version of folk etymological reformation of Proto-Slav. *skorupa and proves hypothesis of Proto-Slav. Dial. structural variants *skorupa /*skorlupa /*skъrlupa.
