Abstract:

The article presents fragments of the handwritten handbook by Hieromonk (later Bishop) German (Weinberg) who described more than 100 services approved by the Synod in the 18th — early 20th centuries. This manuscript completed in 1916 was discovered several years ago in the manuscript department of the National Library of Russia. It is currently being prepared for publication. German recreated the history of liturgical texts drawing on the archival funds of the Synod and the censorship department, which allowed him to establish the dates of creation, the nature of editing, the names of authors and editors of a huge number of church services. The value of this handbook lies in the fact that late Church Slavonic texts, which in recent decades have become the subject of linguistic research, including corpus-based, do not have reliable attributions and their history has not been described. The hereby published original text is supplemented with information about the editing of church services carried out by the Publishing House of the Moscow Patriarchate in 1978–1989. This results in full-fl edged source references on the history of services used in modern practice. This publication includes three essays by German with supplements, and an essay on the history of one of those church services about which Herman was unable to fi nd any information.
