ON THE ISSUE OF STUDYING THE IDIOSTYLE OF F. M. DOSTOEVSKY
Abstract:
The article provides a defi nition of idiostyle as a system of meaningful and formal linguistic characteristics inherent in the works of a certain author which makes unique the author’s way of linguistic expression and the style of his thinking. Within the framework of this understanding several directions of the description of Dostoevsky’s idiostyle are presented. The following approaches to its study are distinguished: 1) linguistic (the study of linguistic units and constructions specifi c to a certain writer and refl ecting the aesthetic organization of his texts); 2) lexicographic (creation of a whole series of dictionaries in which the idioglossary plays a leading role as well as statistical dictionaries); 3) cognitive (defi ning the basic concepts of the author’s idiostyle as well as highlighting the features of modeling his linguistic worldview); 4) fi gurative and visual (focusing on the realities and details of the outside world — a costume, a portrait, etc.); 5) intertextual (defi ning intertextual relations between Dostoevsky’s texts and earlier and later ones). Each area of research receives a detailed description in the text of the article.
