COGNITIVE STYLE THROUGHOUT ITS REPRESENTATIVES IN A LITERARY TEXT
Abstract:
The article discusses the prospects for transferring the concept of “cognitive style” to philology. Its goal is to prove that the cognitive style determines the structure and variety of stylistic devices chosen by the author and thus becomes involved in the formation of the expressive infl uence of the text on the addressee. Anthroponyms were chosen as a representative of the cognitive style. The sources of the material were the novels “Mysterious Passion” by A. P. Aksenov, “Fun Life, or Sex in the USSR” by Yu. M. Polyakov and the story “Details of a Sunset” by V. V. Nabokov. The study showed that the author prefers either an identifying-categorizing or synthesizing model, when he chooses or creat es names for characters; he can also combine these models, alternate them when selec ting the root and affi x morphemes. The variety of submodels included in models and the increments of meaning arising from their interaction increase the recipient’s intellectual pleasure from decoding the text. The cognitive style is also manifested in the di- versity and brightness of the emotional-evaluative connotations of anthroponyms. They can be used to view the author as a romantic, realist or critic. An important indicator is the quantitative ratio of the embeddings of anthroponyms in the denotative space of the text or in the immediate contextual environment, that is, the freedom to switch attention from the signifi ed to the signifi er. A conclusion is made about the productivity of the interdiscip linary transfer of the concept of “cognitive style” and the representatives of the cognitive style in texts that deserve further study are listed.
