 Language Institute of the Russian Aсademy of Sсienсes (Russia, Мosсow) annamalys@mail.ruThe review examines the «Dictionary of Russian dialects of old residents of the Baikal Siberia» by G.V. Afanasieva-Medvedeva. This is the first dialect dictionary in the lexicographical practice, in which the meanings of the words are illustrated by the coherent text examples. It is especially valuable that texts represent complete stories with various subjects. Texts used for illustration were recorded during dialectological expeditions. The subjects of stories are very diverse - life of real people during dramatical episodes of Russian history: revolution, Stalin’s repressions, war and everyday stories: hunting, fishing, harvesting, beleive, traditions etc. Reviewed dictionary is not just a dialectal vocabulary, but rather an ethnographic and historical work containing information about various aspects of the life in Siberia in XX century.
