THE ACADEMICIAN Ya. K. GROT AND THE TVER HISTORIAN A. K. ZHIZNEVSKIY

Abstract:

Using archive data the author describes relations between the representative of Russian academic science Ya. K. Grot and the provincial official, a specialist in local history A. K. Zhiznevskiy (1812–1893). The article contains the short biography of Zhiznevskiy, who was born into a Polish catholic family, graduated from the university and occupied varipous official positions, using his administrative resources in the interests of provincial culture. The author evaluates his activities in the organization of the Tver Museum and the Tver Scientific Archive Commission, founded in 1884 The activity of Tver intellectuals in the process of Slavic manuscripts collecting and publishing is analyzed. Among these manuscripts there is the work by Yuriy Krizhanich, which is kept in Tver Archive and has recently been published as a facsimile. The article describes various forms of interrelations between Zhiznevskiy and such metropolitan scholars as Ya. K. Grot, I. A. Shlyapkin, I. E. Zabelin; the list of Grot’s books in the collection of the Scientific Library of the Tver State University is given; many letters of Grot’s family members stored in Tver archives are quoted, the letters of his son, the famous slavist K.Ya. Grot, among them. The correspondence between Zhiznevskiy and Grots is the evidence of the intensive and rich scientific and cultural life in Russia of the second half of the XIX century.
