THE GRAMMATICAL ANALYSIS OF CONSTRUCTIONS byvaet WITH PASSIVE PARTICIPLES IN RUSSIAN HAGIOGRAPHY

The article examines the use of the construction byvaet with passive participles in East Slavonic hagiography. The research is based on the texts of Lives of Saints of the 16–17th centuries. It was found that this construction is used for marking repeated actions of different generalization. Besides the iterative semantics, it can denote momentary past actions. Some contexts with this construction describe a state or a process. Referring to the archaic use of byvaet with passive participles to describe the momentary action in the past, one may list several typical cases, such as the transformation of the object of a statement to a new state, motivation/order to take a trip, an official meeting. Such contexts are found in the Lives up to the XVIII century. During the analysis of byvaet constructions with passive participles,we take into account not only their semantics and context, but also their role in the composition of the Lives. The study indicated that some cases of the use of this construction are directly associated with a specific place and appear in the Lives because of following an earlier tradition.
