Abstract:

The aim of this work is to study the predicative dative constructions in the language of Lermontov. The material of the study is based on the writer's prose texts which are presented in RNC and all poetic works, including their different edition, published in the collected works of Mikhail Lermontov in 4 volumes [Lermontov M. Works in 4 volumes. L., 1981].

1.1. The overall results of the study.

During our work we take into account only predicative expressions in combination with the Dative case in the sentences without agreement. In total, 67 predicatives were identified and 346 cases of their usage in the above mentioned constructions.

1.2. Frequency analysis of the material.

The most frequent predicative expression in M. Lermontov’s idiolect proved to be the predicative expression “nado” (“there is a need”), recorded in 36 usages, that is 10.4 % of all cases of the usage of predicative constructions by the author. The second place is occupied by the predicative expression “ugodno” (“if it pleases you”) — 26 usages, that is 7.5 % of the total number of occurrences. Third place was shared by two predicative expressions, “zhal’” (“it’s a pity”/ “I’m sorry”) and “nadobno” (“It is necessary”/ “One should…”), used by M. Lermontov in the form of the Dative case 18 times (5.2 % for each case recorded).

1.3. Semantic analysis of the material.

The predicative expressions discovered during the study can be classified according to the semantic principle, based on the Dictionary of Russian predicative expressions (compiled by A. V. Cimmerling). The largest groups in M. Lermontov’s idiolect are: modal predicatives (14 units); predicative expressions denoting the emotional state (also 14 units); parametrical predicatives (11 units).
