A. L. ZHOVTIS: SCHOLAR AND TRANSLATOR
2017. № 1 (11), 189-199
Abstract:
The article deals with the scholarly work of an outstanding Russian philologist and verse expert Alexander Zhovtis who formed an influential verse study school in Alma- Ata in the second half of the XX century. He developed such notions as heterogeneity (“geteromorfnost’”) of verse, ratio of banality/originality in verse structure, style in verse and verse as a two-dimensional structure. His most interesting works developed theory of free verse (verse libre). He is also well known for his poetic translations from Kazakh, Ukranian, Korean, English languages. He believed that a translator should professionally show the interaction of different levels of verse form to render the content of a poem.
