Abstract:

In the 1990s the author proposed her own method—based on the “hierarchy of syntactic links” formulated by M. L. Gasparov and T. V. Skulacheva—for identifying and describing enjambements in poetry. In analyzing the structure of enjambement according to various parameters a new phenomenon was discovered: enjambements over a large number of lines (3 or more) with an expanded word interval. The author of this article labeled this type of enjambement as “prolonged”.

The author demonstrates how an article by Brodsky on Marina Tsvetayeva’s poem “New Yea’s Greeting” supports the concept of “prolonged” enjambement. Brodsky’s analysis of two еnjambements in the poem are seen as reflecting the experience of Tsvetayeva and of Brodsky himself in creating “prolonged” enjambements.

The article reveals some specific features of Brodsky’s and Tsvetayeva’s enjambements in the context of previous tradition, Brodsky, Tsvetayeva.
