INSCRIPTIONS OF THREE 12TH CENTURY NOVGORODIANS: UGRINEC-FEODOR, DOMASHKA MYSLYATINICH AND PUT’KA TVERDYATINICH
Abstract:
The paper consists of three sections offering analysis of three inscriptions by 12th century novgorodians: the colophon of Feodor the scribe at the end of the Yuriev Gospel (1119–1128) and two graffiti inscriptions from St. Sophia Cathedral, one by Domashka Myslyatinich and the other by Put’ka Tverdyatinich. Corrected readings are proposed for all three texts, with the most important ones for that of Put’ka. The word Novougrodou with dialectal reflex of *tort from Feodor’s entry and the enigmatic word sъgrěšьxь in Domashka’s graffito are analyzed. The possibility of establishing Feodor and Tverdyata’s identities as people known from other sources is discussed.
