CONTINUANTS OF WORD-INITIAL *VЪ, *VЬ, *U IN ONE SOUTH RUSSIAN DIALECT

Abstract:

The article deals with the initial *vъ *vь, *u in the South Russian dialect of the vil lage of Rogovatoe, found in prefixes and prepositions *vъ and *u, in the prefix *vъz- and in the beginning of the root. While in Standard Russian the initial *vъ and *u are consistently different, in the western and southern Russian dialects, as well as in Standard Ukrainian and Byelorussian languages and in most their dialects, they consistently coincide. The morphological analysis is preceded by a brief description of the phonemes /v/ and /u/ in the dialect of Rogovatoe.
