Abstract:

The article examines issues related to the development of orthoepic recommenda tions in the course of Russian oral speech for foreign students. When teaching practical Russian to a foreign-language audience, it is especially important to follow the right orthoepic instructions: foreigners might face stricter requirements than native speakers when it comes to pronunciation.

The practice of teaching Russian phonetics shows that orthoepic variability is a factor that complicates the acquisition of pronunciation for those who study Russian as a non native language. Firstly, different pronunciation options for one word are perceived by native speakers of numerous languages as diff erent words. Secondly, orthoepic variabi lity can hinder the acquisition of phonological oppositions, important for the Russian language in a foreign-language audience.

Hence, orthoepic variants are rarely studied in the Russian phonetics course for fo reigners: usually they provide the learner with one standard pronunciation variant, which is selected based on authoritative dictionaries. It is important to point out that the choice is made taking into account not only linguistic, but also linguodidactic criteria, which include the requirement to minimize the educational material, the obligation to prevent potential errors in the interfered speech of foreigners and ensure the simplicity and acces sibility of the language material presentation.
