ON THE PLANT NAMES: PRONUNCIATION VARIABILITY AND CODIFICATION PROBLEM
Abstract:
The paper deals with plant names (phytonyms) as an insufficiently researched group of vocabulary. As evidenced by their reflection in the main explanatory dictionaries of the Modern Russian. Plant names in explanatory dictionaries of the Modern Russian demon strate lack of systematical description. There is a lexicographic tendency to consider plant names as a nomenclature class, a subtype of special vocabulary. This trend leads to simplification and impoverishment of the lexicographic description. However, in botanical sources, Latin nomenclature is considered as proper plant names; there are practically no special dictionaries, reference books, research literature where Russian plant names would be systematically described. Plant names exist in various grammatical, spelling, pronunciation variants. Pronouncing variants are a particular problem, since special literature, as a rule, does not contain information about the place of stress and other features of the pronunciation of the name. In the case when such information is provided, it refers to Latin names. It is reasonable to codify the plant names relying on their usage in Modern Russian.
