Abstract:

The article is devoted to the issue of interdependence between etymology and word-formational analysis of the etymologized word. To illustrate the point, four words with variant etymologies are reviewed, showing that their etymological interpretations may  vary depending on which word-formational structure is assumed: невеста ‘bride’, опока ‘rock; hoarfrost’, мотрошить ‘to drizzle; to bustle about’ и сивуха ‘cheap, nonpurified vodka’. The most noteworthy etymologies for each of these words are cited and discussed, and conclusions are drawn as to which of these etymologies are more convincing from the point of view of word structure.
