Abstract:

The origin of the adjective green is associated with the Indo-European stem *ghel, the color definition of which is syncretic. This fact is confirmed by the material of Russian sub-dialects, where adjectives blue, green and yellow, when designating color, can interchange each other. The color range, which implements the green lexeme in modern dialects, is much broader than in the literary language; the syncretism of color expression is found in the dialect. The range of differences between the meanings of the dialect and the literary word green is quite large: in dialects there are much more meanings. Many of the meanings of the literary language in the dialect are stylistically marked. The lexeme is characterized by a different set of paradigmatic oppositions compared to the literary language.
