PROBLEMS OF SEMANTIZATION OF WORDS IN THE PREPARATION OF A.P. CHEKHOV’S LANGUAGE DICTIONARY
Abstract:
The author’s language dictionary of A .P. Chekhov implemented in the V.V. Vinogradov Russian Language Institute provides a semantization zone in the dictionary entry. The indications of the meanings are as short as possible and give a general idea of each meaning, unlike other meanings of the same word, and in the case of monosemy this zone may not be filled. When filling it out, the authors mainly focused on the Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian language edited by D.N. Ushakov. However, in some cases, this procedure was difficult. This is due, in particular, to the presence of neologisms — semantic occasionalisms — which are mainly found in the writer’s letters. The article focuses on the so-called «family» words the meanings of which are not always clear from the context and allow for different interpretations. We consider several words of this kind with their contexts and frequency characteristics and propose the variants of semantization. According to the analysis of such family words, the compilers of the dictionary come to the conclusion that it is necessary to include in these cases a single sememe in the semantization zone, uniting the interpretation options, and a special «author’s» mark.
