On Proto-Slavic *pakovęžь (an addition to ESSJa 40)
2018. № 4 (18), 188-191
Abstract:
Lower Sorbian pakowjež ‘greater bindweed, Convolvulus sepium’ has no correspondences in other Slavic languages and therefore is to be treated as an isolate. Nevertheless, O.N. Trubachev suggested an etymology for the word that would make it a Proto-Slavic dialectism. The present article discusses his tentative solution from a structural and a semantic point of view, and attempts an alternative explanation.
