ON STRESS VARIANTS IN THE SOURCES OF THE LARGER DICTIONARY OF MODERN CHURCH SLAVONIC

The present article deals with stress variants in some Church Slavonic words observed when working on the first volume of the Larger Dictionary of Modern Church Slavonic (Moscow, 2016). Loanwords beginning with a, mostly of Greek origin, were examined.The study demonstrates that variant stresses in Modern Church Slavonic texts on many
occasions correspond to those found in Old Russian or later hand-written and printed stressed sources (а́е́rъ, anа́fо́ra etc.). Some of these variants are due to printing correctors who prepared the revised editions of the Bible and liturgical books. The variants of borrowed noun stress chosen by printing correctors follow either foreign stress patterns (e. g. а́nthraxъ) or the original pattern with stress on the last syllable of the stem (e.g. anthrа́xъ). The names of Saints Anа́nia and Azа́ria always get stress on the penultimate unlike their numerous namesakes — Anа́nίa, Azа́rίa — in the Bible. As to stress notation the corrections may be inconsistent. Variant stresses occur in various books, various liturgical texts and even in one and the same text. In the 20th century the list of stress discrepancies increased.
