Abstract:

It has been proven statistically that the strength of prosodic breaks differs in different parts of the verse line. Strong breaks and longer pauses occur in the middle of a line, but not close to the borders of a line (not between the first and second, or the penultimate and last words of a line). This is because a long pause close to the borders of a line could interfere with the long pauses between lines. And the pauses between lines mark the division of verse into lines — the main, most stable difference between verse and prose. Groups of ties —strong syntactic ties, special syntactic ties (medium in strength) and weak syntactic ties —are distinguished by their capability for creating a longer or shorter pause. There is a statistical correlation between the types of syntactic ties and the length of a pause. It should be mentioned that the well-known syntactic classifications normally used both in Russian and foreign studies do not show such a correlation. Further formalization of the suggested syntactic classification is necessary and ways of automatically applying it should be developed. The functioning of pauses at the end of the verse line is described for the first time: syntactic pauses typical for a particular tie are predictably lengthened between lines, and the extent to which they are lengthened depends on the type of the tie. It is shown also that the regularities in the distribution of close and loose syntactic ties within the line seem to be typical for verse in general and occur in Spanish as well as in Russian, English and French verse.
