Abstract:

This article examines some examples of Russian and English poetry of XVIII–XIX century. It discusses correlation between morphology and sounds of rhyme-elements in Russian and English verse. We determined all rhyme sets in the selected material and then chose the most widespread. We also determined the most frequently used parts of speech for every rhyme set. We determined the grammatical features which are supposed to affect the phonetic structure of rhyme-elements in Russian and English languages. The results show that Russian and English languages differ greatly as far as the interaction of rhyme sounds and grammar is concerned. In Russian language grammar affects the set of rhyme-elements, so we can predict the phonetic content of rhyme-element just knowing morphological features of the Russian word. But it is almost impossible to predict the phonetic content of an English word by its morphological features, except for a very limited number of cases, like rhyme elements ending in –s.
