Abstract:

The article presents the meanings of the genitive case in substantive phrases formed by temporal lexemes (primarily using the lexeme “time”). Such phrases are usually constructed in such way: the temporal lexeme acts as the main word of construction and subordinates nouns in the genitive case (time for rest, time for love, years of wandering). However, in poetic speech such phrases differ from the standard, common construction of such structures. In poetic language the word time often takes the position of dependent component, for example wine of times, nap of time, theater of times. In such phrases the semantics of temporal lexemes is in a complex interaction with the semantics of grammatical case. The result of such a compound is the ambiguity of the substantive phrases in a poetic text, and this is one of the manifestations of the poetic function of language. Such examples allow poets to create semantically volumetric, ambiguous phrases that combine several syntactic meanings. Usage examples of genitive in substantive phrases are analyzed from the standpoint of functional and communicative syntax.
