Ya. K. GROT’S ORTHOGRAPHICAL FINDINGS IN S. P. OBNORSKII’S EVALUATION
Abstract:
The article considers Ya. K. Grot’s work and his “Debatable issues of Russian orthography from Peter the Great hitherto” and “Russian orthography”, which turned out to be innovative for the orthographical practice of the end of the 19th century. The author’s normative directives are analyzed both in the context of contemporary orthographic standards and S. P. Obnorskii’s orthographical treatises. S. P. Obnorskii worked at the problems of unification of spelling in the 20th century and played an important role in creation of functioning “Rules of Russian orthography and punctuation” in 1956 Not only S. P. Obnorskii’s statements concerning Ya. K. Grot and his contribution into the standardization of the Russian orthography of the turn of the 19th century are given, but also the unity of their approaches to the solution of the most important theoretical issues being hotly discussed at that time is revealed, in particular the understanding of the im- possibility of the Russian orthography revising of on the phonetic basis, the confirmation of the morphological source supremacy, the vision of orthography as an inseparable part of the general culture and inner inte- grated system, its future being not a reform but a partial settlement. The author reveals what Ya. K. Grot’s recommendations and academic projects of rules of 1939 and 1940 (1st and 2nd editions) developed under S. P. Obnorskii’s guidance had in common with respect to the spelling of o/e after plosives.
