L. L. KASATKIN AND THE HISTORY OF THE STUDY OF KOSTROMA AKAYUSHCHY OSTROV
Abstract:
For many years, L. L. Kasatkin studied the problem of isolated akanya in Kostroma region, both theoretically and using field methods. Together with E. G. Burova, he identified the dissimilative akanye of the Belarusian (Zhizdrin) type and a special type of yakanye, metonymically called by him Chukhloma type, which, in his opinion, could have been the prototype of the dissimilative-moderate yakanye of the Verkhnedneprovsky (Upper Dnieper) type. It was this feature that he considered fundamental in determining the typology of Kostroma island dialects. L. L. Kasatkin’s profound and nuanced research into the Kostroma akanye dialects continues to inspire scientific thought towards a more precise definition of the status of the Kostromskoi akayushchy ostrov (Kostroma akanye island) as a new instratal formation within predominant Northern-Russia dialects with okanye. Also important for Kostroma dialectology is the consideration of L. L. Kasatkin’s opinion, which coincides with R. O. Jakobson’s position on the status of Vladimirsko-Povolzhskytype dialects with incomplete okanye as dialects of the Central-Russia-type. The speech idiom of the western part of the Kostroma region includes Nerekhta and Krasnoselsky dialects with incomplete okanye and an emerging transition to Central-Russia dialects, close to the typology of Ivanovo dialects. In conclusion, the author of the article emphasizes L. L. Kasatkin’s idea of the need for deep knowledge in linguogeography and language history for the proper assessment of dialect materials of complex structure, adding to this the importance of accurately accounting for dynamic extralinguistic aspects.
