ABOUT THE TYPOLOGY OF CORRELATIONS BETWEEN LANDSCAPE TERM AND GEOGRAPHICAL NAME
Abstract:
The objective of the article is to assess possibilities of exploring regional history of folk landscape terms, taking into account the testimonies of regional toponymic correlates. Four main types of relationship between homonymous landscape terms and place names within the Novgorod region is highlighted and described. The type I consists of frequently used polysemic terms, which correlate with numerous regional place names (bor ‘coniferous forest; an open sublime place’, niva ‘arable land; wasteland’, etc.); the type II is represented by rare terminology that has rare toponyms-correlates (bagno ‘swamp’, suhodon ‘dry place’, etc.); the type III is the most commonly used polysemic terms with rare toponyms-correlates (liman ‘bay; swamp; deep place’, kurgan ‘mound; elevation’, etc.); the type IV is extremely rare (single or even missing in the region) terms with very many counterparts in the regional toponymy (dubrova ‘forest; field; mowing’, dor ‘wooded terrain).
