KASATKIN–ORPHOEPIST

The article offers an analysis of L. L. Kasatkin’s works in the field of Russian orthoepy. His main contribution to orthoepical research is that he was able to give this section of the sound system of the Russian language a theoretical basis. Largely due to his work, orthoepy ceased to look like a practical application to phonetics. The main concepts underlying his orthoepical research are listed and disclosed: the subject and scope of orthoepy, the orthoepeme as a unit of orthoepy, and the orthoepical position. Special attention is paid to the main orthoepical work of L. L. Kasatkin — the creation of the “Large orthoepical Dictionary of the Russian language.” The article proves that this is a fundamental academic-type dictionary by genre, which is manifested in various aspects of its structure. It describes the various problems of this lexicographic source, its strengths and weaknesses. L. L. Kasatkin developed a special section in the dictionary — “Ortho epical rules”, a very voluminous section that has no analogues in Russian pronunciation lexicography. According to the plan, these brief rules contained instructions on the basis of which codification recommendations for each specific word were to be derived. The Great Orthoepical Dictionary is a worthy monument to L. L. Kasatkin.
