Abstract:

The article examines the cultural identity depicted in the speech of representatives of traditional rural society. The opinion is expressed concerning the expediency of studying the problem of dialect speakers’ identity in terms of two main vectors — from the point of view of self-identifi cation common to speakers of different territorial dialects (self-identification characteristic of all speakers of traditional folk culture) and from the point of view of local identity related to the territorial factor. Identity features may also be determined by cultural differences within the same dialect community (for example, if there are different confessional communities in the same village).
The article highlights the types of cultural identity in terms of their distribution in traditional society (general cultural, subcultural, local identity), as well as classifi cation clusters — the thematic sphere, value orientations, within which general cultural, subcultural, and local identity receive their substantive specification.
It is noted that different types of self-identifi cation can be in a relationship of mutual intersection: religious and mythological representations characterize both the general cultural identity of a dialectal society as a whole, and receive specific features within the framework of subcultural and local identity; the oppositions “before-now, “one’s– other’s” signifi cant for folk traditional culture as a whole, are also represented in their own local and subcultural variants.
