Abstract:

The article uses the material of the dictionary entry of “Dostoevsky’s Idioglossary” to prove that the core of the author’s thesaurus is the concept of ‘man’, studies some idiostylistic features of the functioning of the word man in the texts of various genres by Fyodor M. Dostoevsky, presented in the complete works of the writer in 30 volumes. Specifically, it pays attention to the semantic structure of the word man, its parataxis and hypotaxis, etc. The particular attention is paid to the individual authorial and evaluative adjectives used with the word man, their invective function, as well as their frequent occurrence in an ironic context. It makes an attempt to establish the content of a fragment of the textual semantic field ‘man’, identifi es the lexico-semantic groups with which this field interacts. To illustrate the cognitive signifi cance of the concept of ‘man’ it uses the material recorded in the section of aphoristic statements of the commentary of the dictionary entry of “Dostoevsky’s Idioglossary”. The assumption is put forward that a man in Dostoevsky’s texts is a being woven of paradoxes, and the word man in the writer’s works is highly evaluative — from the ugly to the image and likeness of God. If we talk about the Russian man then his main function is all-unity.
