Abstract:

The article provides a number of data that allow us to make some clarifi cations on the problem of the origin of the anti-resultative meaning of the pluperfect in the history of Russian. Despite the question whether the «Russian» pluperfect had a resultative meaning is controversial, the material of the West Russian chronicles allows to state that there was this meaning at least in the West Russian dialects. Apparently, it was on its basis that the anti-resultative meaning developed. The likelihood of this scenario is confirmed by the modern dialect data with the «new» perfect, where the resultative meaning of the pluperfect can be contextually complicated by the anti-resultativity. The Old Russian examples with the anti-resultative use of the l-form without auxiliary also testify to this evolution.
The fact that the «Russian» pluperfect had a resultative meaning in the West Russian dialects doesn’t permit to exclude it for the «Russian» pluperfect in those Old Russian dialects where it isn’t confi rmed by the texts (fi rst of all, for Old Novgorod dialect). Its absence can be explained by the diff erent rate of the evolution of the temporal system.
