Abstract:

There is a need to create a new academic dictionary of accents of the Russian language motivated by the following factors. First, there’s been a signifi cant change in the sound structure of the language, the obsolescence of certain accentological recommendations and the emergence of new norms that have not been codifi ed yet. Second, a large number of recently coined words, as well as rare words require lexicographical commentary. Third, some of the existing ‘myths’ about the place stress in specifi c words need to be revised. Moreover, there is a need to change the approach to the very process of codifi cation of accentological norms. The authors of the new dictionary of accents are convinced that we must adopt the codifi cation accentological recommendations on the basis of a research procedure founded on sociolinguistic experiments that allow an objective representation of the distribution of stress variants. The accent variants identifi ed in the sounding speech of educated people should be taken into account when developing pronunciation recommendations. All other criteria, cultural and historical tradition, autho rity of ‘experts’, speech skills and language taste of the author of the dictionary and society approval, etc. have a secondary character. Most of the previous orthoepic sources practically ignored the criterion for compliance with the main trends in the development of the language system and for decades preserved outdated traditional orthoepic variants, ignoring the new ones. The article also discusses the criteria for compiling a dictionary, the system of droppings and the use of illustrations that allow verifying the norm. Various aspects of stress codifi cation that distinguish the new dictionary from its analogues are analyzed in detail.
