2023. № 3 (37), 75-80
Abstract:
The article deals with the geographical distribution and etymology of the verbs that mean ‘to call someone’ which are used in the Slavic language territory. The linguistic material from The Slavic Linguistic Atlas shows that mainly four roots are used for deriving in the largest areas: zov-e-, vol-a-, klič-e-, vyk-a-. The remaining roots/verbs are located in smaller areas, usually within one language territory. Etymologically, most verbs, almost all, have in common that their origin is onomatopoeic. Only three verb roots are exceptions — jьmen-, prav-i- and šum-i-.
