LINGUISTIC GEOGRAPHY OF THE BELARUSIAN AKANNE: BASED ON THE MATERIALS OF THE VOLUME “REFLEXES *A” OF “SLAVIC LINGUISTIC ATLAS”

Abstract:

In the article area linguistic regularities of “Belarusian akanne” (the pronunciation of unstressed “o” as “a”) in the the Slavic dialect context are described. The basis of the analysis is Proto-Slavic *a refl exes in diff erent typologically signifi cant positions in the word. Basic scientifi c hypotheses of akanne phenomenon in linguistics are correlated. The relation of refl exes *a and the original vowel quality is established, as well as stressed/unstressed position in syllable. Areal representation of refl exes *a (at the beginning of words and after palatal consonants, hard consonants, palatalized; in open and a new closed syllables, at the end of the word) is identifi ed. The real diff erentiation of the Slavic dialects and the dynamics of this diff erentiation on the maps of the volume is refl ected.
