Abstract:

On the basis of data obtained through questionnaire fi eld research for the Atlas slovenského jazyka (Atlas of the Slovak Language), as well as examples from the card fi le for the Slovník slovenských nárečí (Dictionary of the Slovak Dialects) and dialect texts, the article defi nes the territorial occurrence of the Slovak predicatives načim, način, nadbe, nabe [it needs] and describes their functions. Attention is also paid to the occurrence of the predicative način (-m) in the dialects of the Slovak enclaves in Hungary and Serbia. The modal meaning of necessity or inevitability is expressed by the lexemes nadbe, nabe in the dialects of a small number of municipalities, forming a micro-area within the eastern part of the South-Central Slovak dialect region. We assume that the forms nadbe, nabe — as well as their Russian equivalent надо — originate in Proto-Slavic form *nadobě (which is the Dsg and Lsg of *nadoba).
