Abstract:

It is known that the matrix predicates of emotion and evaluation subordinate sentential arguments not only with conjunctions chto ‘that’: Obidno / plokho, chto komanda proigrala ‘It’s a shame / Too bad the team lost’, but also with conjunctions kogda / esli ‘when’ / ‘if’: Plokho, kogda / esli komanda proigryvaet ‘It’s bad if the team loses’.  The RNC data show that predicates of other semantic classes that are not mentioned in grammars can also subordinate clauses with conjunctions kogda ‘when’ and esli ‘if’. The article discusses examples of such sentences with perception predicates (videt’ / vidno ‘see’, lyshat’ / slyshno ‘hear’): Na tret’em jetazhe v zapertoj kvartire ochen’ horosho slyshno, kogda kto-to vhodit v pod’’ezd ‘On the third fl oor in a locked apartment, you can hear very well when someone enters the entrance’; My vsegda mozhem uvidet’, esli v shkolu zashel kto-to postoronnij ‘We can always see if a stranger has entered the school’.
