Abstract:

The article considers possibilities of finding an Indo-European etymology for Russian dialectal orebnyi ‘cold (of wind)’, rebushko ‘north-east wind’. Formal resemblance between these cases and Slav. *arębъ is discussed, a typological parallel for a color- related word for ‘wind’ is shown to exist in Ancient Greek. An alternate etymological option is suggested as well.
