PROTO-SLAVIC LEXICAL DIALECTISMS OF THE EAST SLAVIC VOCABULARY (BASED ON THE DATA OF THE ESSJA, VOL. 1–41)
Abstract:
While working with the data of the ESSJa (vols. 1–41), one subject of study were the East Slavic dialectisms that stand out on account of the fact that they are not found to participate in any internal Slavic etymological correspondences. Such lexemes of limited distribution are nevertheless fragments of the Proto-Slavic lexical stock. The East Slavic territory was an area of expansion for the Slavs, and, as a rule, archaic phenomena tend to be better preserved in peripheral regions in comparison with the rest of the Slavic world. East Slavic dialectisms retain some of the phenomena that are otherwise lost or poorly attested in the Slavic languages such as: ancient verbs, fragmentary links of derivational chains, lexical-structural units that have exact Indo-European correspondences outside of Slavic. Special attention should be paid to the exclusive connections between East Slavic dialectisms and their counterparts in Baltic languages.
