Abstract:

The article contains a detailed criticism of one of the interpretations of a short Cyrillic inscription on a fragment of a ceramic vessel of the XI century, which was found during archaeological excavations at the site of the medieval city of Tymutarakan (the Kuban River delta). The analyzed version is unacceptable both from the content side and because of numerous errors in the linguistic proofs themselves (morphophonology, word formation, semantics). The author suggests the rules of using lexical data of folk dialects in the argumentation system.
