ON ETYMOLOGY OF SOME NORTHRUSSIAN DIALECT LEXIC GROUP (IN DAL’S TRACK)
Abstract:
The article presents etymological analysis of the northrussian dialect lexical group говéнник, говéйник, говéльник, говéдник ‘scarf that ties bended ends of front runners in sledge (in form of rote)’. The basis of etymological interpretation is говетáн ‘rote scarf in fisherman’s device’ cited by V.Dal in the dictionary article говéд(т)ник ‘scarf in sledge’. The word говетан/ говитан has another meaning ‘trap, rote’. Dal’s comparison is interpreted as indication of genetic connection of words and also of initial form говéтник. So the next transformation is supposed: говетáн ̶ *говéтник / говéдник ̶ говéнник ̶ говéльник ̶ говéйник. For говетáн the loan-word is supposed, probable of Germanic noun derived from Protogerm. *vedan ‘tie’ (Got. ga-vidan, OHG wetan, MHG weten).
