Abstract:

The article discusses the scientific ideas of the well-known linguist I. G. Golanov, who stood at the origins of the formation of modern dialectology. We examine advanced approaches and innovative techniques for studying and describing dialects in the framework of traditional comparative studies and taking into account new trends in science. The author gives little-known facts from the history of dialectology in Russia. Materials of the epistolary heritage of I. G. Golanov are used in preparing the article. His letters to D. N. Ushakov tells about the interest of the budding scientist to the history of the Russian language. We note the role of I. G. Golanov in the activities of the Moscow dialectological Commission. Special attention is paid to his pioneering work in the field of ethnology and sociology of linguistics from the standpoint of areal approach to the study of language. It showed I. G. Golanov as an advanced scientist, who kept pace with global approaches to diachronic linguistics, and was an expert in European scientific tradition. Rich legacy of wonderful linguist is still not widely recognized in modern linguistic theory and practice and needs in the promotion and study.
